Choosing your makeup artist for your wedding day is an important decision. Of course, you want someone who makes you feel the most beautiful you’ve ever felt - but just as importantly, someone who brings a calm, reassuring presence on your special morning. We spoke with Gold Coast based makeup and hair artist Madi Wolfe about her journey, her approach to bridal beauty, and the looks brides are loving right now.
Tell us a little about how you first got into the world of hair and makeup?
I grew up in the world of cheerleading, I learnt at quite a young age how to do my own hair and makeup. As I was finishing school I realised I enjoyed learning in more of a hands on way. I considered a beauty course but figured I’d rather focus on makeup. I studied a short course at Huxley school of makeup, then picked up a job at Mecca which threw me right into the makeup world. Now I’ve been freelancing for 10 years and I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.
What do you love most about being part of someone’s wedding morning?
I love the energy and atmosphere on a wedding day. My favourite thing is getting ready with my girls and now I’ve created a job around it. The most rewarding feeling is watching someone’s confidence radiate when you show them the completed look.
Have you noticed any bridal beauty trends lately? What makeup or hair looks have been the most requested by brides recently?
I’ve found brides are opting for a less is more approach. My style really leans into enhancing someone’s natural features and beauty. Think soft, undone, chic.
Do you have any go-to foundations or base products you love using on brides?
I love focusing on a natural glowing finish to the skin. To achieve this, I’m currently obsessed with the Haus Labs by Lady Gaga - Triclone Skin Tech Foundation. It gives such a beautiful skin-like finish as well as providing incredible long wear. If someone isn’t comfortable wearing a lot of makeup I typically opt for the OG Mac Cosmetics - Studio Face & Body foundation. This is a more sheer formula that allows their natural skin to shine through.
What advice would you give brides when it comes to preparing their skin in the months or weeks leading up to their wedding day?
Hydration, hydration, hydration! Drink plenty of water, incorporate regular hydrating facials and good skin care. Your skin will only look as good as the canvas underneath, so looking after it in the months leading up to the wedding day is important. Regular light exfoliation & LED treatments are also a great options for skin health and texture.
Do you have any tips for making hair and makeup last from the ceremony through to the dance floor?
Thin layers of multiple products, setting sprays and primers help to ensure long lasting makeup. Lipstick is the one product I find that wears the fastest. Having a touch up gloss or lipstick on hand is always a good option to ensure you’re photo ready. Hair extensions are super helpful for adding volume and ensuring the longevity of your hairstyle.
Do you have a career highlight or a favourite wedding you've been apart of?
It would be hard to top last year’s wedding in Lake Como, Italy. This was an intimate micro wedding of 14 people. I did makeup on 7 of them (all the females attending!) the bride, bridal party and family. I was doing the makeup with the most incredible view of the lake and we got to watch over the courtyard as they set up. It was truly magic!
