Wedding Photographer In Focus | Bulb Creative

One of the most important decisions you can make on your wedding day, is choosing your photographer. In our opinion, investing in a highly experienced photographer is truly priceless, as your photos will last a lifetime. We spoke with Bulb Creative, the talented husband-and-wife team who continually inspires us with their refined approach to wedding photography, and asked them a few questions:

Tell us a little about yourself and how you found your way into wedding photography.

My wife and I have always had a passion for photography throughout school. After we got married we just decided to give it a go. We tried all sorts of things from family shoots to cake smashes, but ultimately fell in love with weddings. We left our careers in primary education and nursing to pursue our wedding photography dreams, and here we are 10 years later still loving it.

How would you describe your photography style, and what inspires your creative approach?

We are inspired by editorial style frames that blend raw emotion and timeless beauty. We are drawn to dreamy light, graceful details, soft tones, and poetic motion. We are inspired by fashion and aim to bring that fashion-forward look into our wedding shoots.

What do you love most about capturing weddings?

We love how wedding photography is a blend of all types of photography. There is this documentary and cinematic storytelling element blurred with fashion and portraits, and everything in between. We love mixing those elements to create an overall cohesive look.  As well as being a part of a super important and special day for our couples - being asked to photograph their day is truly an honour.

Do you have a favourite wedding moment or story that stands out from your career so far?

A stand out and "pinch me" moment for us was when my wife  (Ainsley) and I were both shooting a wedding on an island in Greece called Rhodes in 2019. We had travelled over there with our videographer friends to capture someone's day in the most beautiful part of the world and got to call that work. What an absolute honour that was.

If you could give one piece of advice to a couple on their wedding day, what would it be?

To take a moment to be together without anyone else there. As everyone says, the day goes so quickly and it's such a jam packed day. Give yourself at least 5 minutes to just be together. I like to try and initiate this moment during portraits while I step away and shoot from a distance, so I know my couples are actually enjoying this day together.

Do you have a “hot take” or controversial opinion about weddings or wedding photography?

If in doubt, go for a lighter tan. The darker is not always the better option.

How do you help couples feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera?

Being relatable and human. My goal is to capture couples in a way that is uniquely them, not to force my vibes onto them. I can often tell within the first few minutes how the couple will like to be photographed. Some couples are super energetic and just want to have fun and laugh, and some couples are a little more quiet and reserved who prefer to turn inwards towards each other. Everyone is welcomed and my job is to make them feel like I'm not really there. I aim to give soft direction and lead them through the shoot as if they are just hanging out together in their own little world.

What trends or shifts have you noticed in wedding photography lately?

The biggest shift I have seen is shooting a lot wider. Although I love a good perfectly exposed and framed portrait, the shift I'm seeing in weddings is around capturing the beauty in the mess. Whether that's using a wider angle lens or shooting on an angle, it's about embracing the day for what it is and getting that all in frame.
