We recently welcomed Ollie into our showroom to choose the perfect engagement ring for his partner, Nicola. He decided on a stunning custom design, a 2.5ct pear-shaped lab-grown diamond, set on a curved 18k yellow gold band. After the proposal, we had the joy of chatting with the couple to hear their story firsthand.
Tell us a bit about your love story. How long have you been together or how you met?
Prior to getting engaged we were together for seven and a half years. We met when we were 21 years old, playing hockey at a national tournament in Wollongong. We knew of each other prior but had never spoken. Then on the last night of the tournament, all the different state teams came together for a big party, and it was there that we came together on the dance floor and sparks flew. The rest is history!
We'd love to hear details of your proposal. Where did Ollie propose and how?
It was a Friday morning and we were meant to be going 'away for the weekend’. We do love to walk at Mermaid beach at sunrise with our dog Sadie so Ollie suggested that’s how we start the day, but Ollie was really pushing for us to go for one this morning so I was a little suspect. I tried to link arm’s during the walk but he pulled away quickly which I thought was weird, but makes sense in hindsight now knowing the ring was tucked into his jacket!
It was a beautiful morning though, and as we were coming to the end of our walk, Ollie dropped to one knee and proposed. The whole moment was honestly a blur, but it was super special. Ollie had also organised for one of my friends to sit up in the sand dunes and capture it, which is great to look back on.
After the proposal he had organised a whole weekend for us. It started with me getting my nails done (very thoughtful), followed by a couples massage and spa day, and then into dinner and a night's stay at the Langham. The following morning we went for a run, and then as we finished at a cafe I was surprised by my parents who had flown up from Melbourne. The weekend continued by celebrating with our families and FaceTiming friends to share the news.
Your engagement ring is absolutely stunning and quite unique! What inspired the design, and what was the process like bringing it to life?
My ring is stunning, I love it. I knew I wanted something unique, and had shown Ollie a few things over time that I'd liked and didn't like. Although I didn’t want to know what ring he would one day propose with so I left it up to him. In the end Ollie was helped by the Theadore team and Kylie and put it all together, and they did an amazing job. I’m obsessed!
What are you most excited for in your future as a couple?
Everything. Firstly our wedding day and getting married to my best friend. Then of course starting a family, something we are most excited for.
