At the end of last year, we welcomed Harry into our showroom to create a bespoke engagement ring for his partner, Jess. He knew from the beginning that an Old Mine Cut Cushion was the one - a rare, vintage-inspired cut known for its chunky facets and soft sparkle.
Together, we selected a 3.05ct elongated Old Mine Cut Cushion lab-grown diamond and set it in 18k yellow gold with compass-set prongs and a medium-profile setting.
We caught up with Harry and Jess to hear more about their love story, their proposal and the process behind creating a ring that felt completely their own.
Tell us a little about your love story. How did you meet, and how long have you been together?
We met on a night out in Wollongong. Jess tapped me on the shoulder to get my attention, something she would never normally do (must've been fate I guess?), and we've been inseparable for almost 7 years since. We've moved states, countries (and back) together and have already experienced so many incredible adventures.
We'd love to hear the proposal story! Where and how did it happen?
I really wanted to propose somewhere that meant something to us, and we've lived in Main Beach for most of our relationship so it felt like the perfect place.
I surprised Jess with a staycation just down the road at The Sheraton and pulled off a perfect sunset beach picnic proposal (thanks to the help of our mates for the setup).
We often go for walks along the beach together, and being able to stop by and remember that moment is really special.

Your engagement ring features an Old Mine Cut Cushion, which is a rare and distinctive diamond cut. What first drew you to this vintage style?
I can't really take credit for this one, as Jess had her eye on this cut for a long time. She loved the old mine cut for its chunky facets that looked classic, timeless and unique.
After Jess shared some inspiration with me I went down a rabbit hole of ratios, cuts and clarities and pored over the design for ages, but am really happy with my decision because she absolutely loves it! Months later, she often comes home from work sharing stories about the compliments she received from clients at work that day, and I love the coy smile she has when she does.

What was your experience like designing your ring with Theadore + Co?
It was honestly a great experience, they fielded my countless questions and queries over email without batting an eyelid. They gave me a lot of reassurance and guidance throughout the whole process, and I felt really happy that I chose them for this special gift. I loved being able to go in to the store to look at options and discuss them with the friendly team members, as well as being able to pick it up in person.
Now that you're engaged, what are you most looking forward to in the future?
Wedding planning is in full swing. We've picked an amazing venue in the Gold Coast hinterland for our special day next year and cannot wait to celebrate with our favourite people. After that, we're excited to continue our adventures together both big and small, including lots more travel and raising a family if we're lucky enough.
At Theadore + Co, we can source Old Mine Cut and antique-inspired Cushion Cut diamonds for bespoke engagement rings. Because these stones can vary significantly in their proportions and faceting, our team can source a selection of options and help you find a diamond with the shape and character you’re drawn to.
